Hits Of Huey Lewis
By A. Klimas
I remember the early to mid 80's very fondly. Some of my favorite pop albums (Rio, Thriller, Purple Rain, Reckless, Born In The USA, Pyromania, H2O etc..) were released during this time and 'Sports' was one of them. Hearing 'Heart & Soul' for the first time (of course it's highly entertaining video being that aforementioned time) was a revelation. This album soundtracked 1983-84 for me. I can't listen to 'I Want A New Drug' without thinking of long summer days spent building forts in the woods with my brother. I can't hear 'The Heart Of Rock & Roll' without reliving memories of going down to Wildwood with my family and running around on the beach. Of course I can't play 'If This Is It' without thinking of riding bikes and playing ball with my friends. 'Sports' is more than a collection of 9 great songs, it's a moment in time. A time capsule containing some great memories and feelings.
This 30th anniversary edition really brings a great deal of depth to the music. It's great to hear the tunes get the upgrade they deserve after 1999's subpar and bass heavy re-release. My only complaint about this set is the absence of the original 12' mixes. An updated remaster of some of these reworkings and rather rare mixes would've been a very welcome addition and there's more than enough empty space over the two disc set to have accommodated them. This complaint, however, is small and the album itself is so good that it's easy to look past. 'Sports' is a classic and should be in every music lovers collection. If you haven't already, pick this up immediately. You won't regret it. Brilliant!!!
